25 May

Illustration boom is the title of our 2nd year show, we have been organizing it for a while now but its finally been and gone, and it was great. The opening night was very exciting, it was nice to get good comments about my work as well. I used my work from the narrative project.

Here are some pics of my work:

Another great book

16 May

I have purchased yet another book, this one called ‘MECHANIKA’ follows the work from Sci-Fi artist Doug Chiang. It’s a great little book with tips on how to create robots and other cool stuff. The good thing is it only cost me £8 which is a bloody good price :) .

Great new book

13 May

I have just purchased a new book which is awesome! its a collection of work from five different concept artists who have worked together to create a story and some amazing art. The book is called ‘exodyssey’, the only problem is the price, i had to fork over £25 for it but it was well worth it. Check out the website: www.exodyssey.com

Dissertation talk

13 May

We had a talk about our dissertations today with steve and it was very helpful. We had a long talk about how research are like sugar cubes, but i wont go into detail about that. He told us about past dissertations which worked well, one of them had the title: ‘People who predicted the death of print were wrong’. After a long conversation about my dissertation we finally came to a conclusion on my final title which is ‘ Storyboards in film have never been more important’.

Talya Baldwin

11 May

Talya Baldwin popped in for a talk about being an illustrator, she was quite nervous to start with because we were the biggest audience she has had but she was great. I admired her because it seemed like she has had to battle through a lot to get to where she is now. She talked about how she collected dead animals to draw, which was quite bizarre but made sense when she showed us her beautifully intricate drawings of them.

We had another session with her afterwards where we all had to do drawings of something that had happened in the day, but we could only use one tool. I decided to use a black biro to draw a plate of baked beans because that’s the only thing I could remember doing.

After we finished drawing we had to stick them up on the wall and she picked a few out to talk about, one of the people she picked turned out to be me! So I had to explain why I had done a badly drawn plate of beans on toast, which was quite funny.

Matt Savage

5 May

Concept artist Matt Savage came in today and it has been the best guest speaker so far for me because he is doing what I am interested in, so it was great to see how the life of a concept artist is.

He started by talking about the projects he has worked on which span from working on Doctor Who to The Dark Knight. Then we got an in depth look into his portfolio which showed of his concepts for the Darlek’s and various Batman gadgets.

To get into the film industry he said was a slow but very rewarding time, he started work on the thunderbirds set making tea and coffee for people, then he had a chance to show his portfolio to the guys who were making the film, and this is how you get into these jobs, you just have to stick at it and eventually get your breakthrough.

He then had the same job making tea and coffee but this time on the set of Batman Begins, which he said was amazing. From the work at Batman Begins he got called up to be a concept artist on the film The Dark Knight. While working on the Dark Knight he got to go in the tumbler and try on the bat-suit! How cool is that.

After the talk me and a few others decided to stay behind and have a good chat to him and we got some great advice on what to do and how to try and get in the concept design / film industry, overall was a brilliant talk which has helped me immensely on what I want to do in the future.
